Job description

Background and Purpose

Aridlife Development Agency periodically carries out assessments, surveys, and monitoring exercises such as baselines, endlines, post-distribution monitoring, and rapid needs assessments across its area of operation to support programs. To respond quickly when these exercises come up, Aridlife is building a prequalified roster of enumerators and data collectors who can be deployed on short notice in Balcad, Afgoye, Baidoa, Burhakaba, and Mogadishu.

This is a call to join that roster, not a vacancy announcement for a single assignment. Being prequalified means a candidate has been screened and tested in advance; it does not guarantee work. Aridlife will contact roster members only when a specific data collection exercise requires enumerators in their location.

Nature of Engagement

Short-term, casual engagement paid on a daily or per-exercise basis not permanent employment.

Assignment frequency and duration will vary depending on program needs; some roster members may not be called for extended periods.

Roster validity: 12 months, after which candidates may be asked to update their information or reapply.

Placement on the roster creates no obligation on Aridlife to offer assignments, and no obligation on the enumerator to accept every assignment offered.

     Daily rate: Varies by location.

Locations

Aridlife is prequalifying enumerators separately for each of the following locations. Applicants must indicate the specific location(s) they are applying for and must be resident in, or able to demonstrate reliable and safe access to, that location:

     Balcad

     Afgoye

     Baidoa

     Burhakaba

     Mogadishu

Skills and qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Minimum secondary school (Form 4) certificate; a diploma or degree is an advantage.

Experience: Prior experience in household surveys, needs assessments, or monitoring data collection is preferred; experience with mobile data collection tools such as KoboToolbox, ODK, or CommCare is strongly preferred.

Language: Fluency in spoken and written Somali; working proficiency in English is an advantage.

Residency and Access: Must reside in, or have reliable and safe access to, at least one of the five locations listed above.

Digital Literacy: Comfortable using a smartphone or tablet and able to navigate a data collection app after a short training.

Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the community structures and context of the location applied for.

Key Skills and Competencies

Accuracy and attention to detail in recording data

Punctuality and reliability across multi-day assignments

Ability to follow a structured questionnaire under a supervisor's direction

Basic numeracy for skip patterns and in-field calculations

Ability to interview community members, including women, caregivers, and children, with sensitivity and respect, particularly on protection-related topics

Willingness to travel within the assigned location, including to hard-to-reach areas, as needed

Safeguarding Requirements

Aridlife has zero tolerance for child abuse and for sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) by anyone engaged on its behalf, including short-term enumerators. All prequalified enumerators, regardless of the length of an individual assignment, are required to:

Sign and comply with Aridlife's Child Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct

Complete a brief safeguarding and PSEA briefing before their first assignment

Undergo reference checks and, for assignments involving direct contact with children, an identity and background check

Selection Process

Applications are screened against the minimum qualifications above.

Shortlisted candidates are invited to a written and/or practical data collection test, which may include a mock exercise using Kobo/ODK.

Successful candidates are added to Aridlife's prequalified enumerator roster for their location.

Shortlisting, testing, or roster placement does not constitute an offer of employment or a guarantee of future assignments.

Equal Opportunity

Aridlife is an equal opportunity organization. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply, given the importance of gender balance for interviewing women, girls, and survivors of gender-based violence on sensitive topics. Persons with disabilities and candidates from underrepresented communities in the operational areas are also encouraged to apply.
